NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Newport News Police Department is investigating a deadly shooting at 32nd Street and Marshall Avenue Monday afternoon.

Around 4:22 p.m., police arrived at the scene to find a man suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim, 17-year-old Stephen Davis, Jr., was pronounced dead minutes later.

This incident is being investigated as a homicide. There is no suspect information at this time.

Terry Reed, who lives down the street from where the shooting happened said he heard the gunshots as he was about to head out the door.

"I heard pow, pow pow, pow, pow. So when I heard that we had walked out and we seen him literally just laying there," said Reed.

Reed said what's terrifying about this shooting is the location.

"My daughter catches the bus literally right there where he was standing. So tomorrow morning when I walk her to her bus stop, it’s literally right there. So for me as a parent, it’s not right," said Reed. He added he normally doesn't walk his daughter to the bus stop, but that's changing Tuesday morning.

For Newport News Police, what's not right is this is the second homicide of the year.

"One homicide is one too many. This is a 17-year-old kid. It's a sad situation. I've heard some family members in the background and just hearing their grief. It's tough. Hopefully, we solve this," said Officer Brandon Maynard.

The investigation remains ongoing.
