News 3 and sponsoring partners are coming together for a food drive to help local food banks during this time of extreme need.

From April 26 - May 16, we will be taking food donations as well as monetary donations to benefit the Virginia Peninsula Food Bank, the Food Bank of the Albemarle and the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore.

The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore predicts more than 130,000 people will experience food insecurity in their service areas alone— an increase of 17 percent from before the pandemic.

On Thursday, May 6, we are having a phone bank to take donations! You can call 757-227-6424 from 11 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. to give, or you can click the button below.

You can donate non-perishable food like lean canned protein (peanut butter, tuna, chicken, turkey, beans), fruits and vegetables (canned fruits, canned veggies, pasta sauce, 100% fruit juice), whole grains (cereal, pasta, oatmeal, rice, crackers), boxed meals (soups, stews, boxed meals, canned pasta) and baby products (formula, baby food, diapers, wipes).

You can also give monetarily by using the button below:

The YMCA at Hilltop is one of the participating locations. Executive Director Frank Klein says they're honored to help the community and that their members have been very generous so far.

“Healthy mind, body and spirit is something that’s foundational to the YMCA, and the YMCA of South Hampton Roads in particular, and we were fortunate to have this opportunity to support the Feed the Need program," stated Klein.

Not far from that location, at Saladworks, owner MaryAnn Cohen said the national chain has partnered with "No Kid Hungry" and this local effort is a natural fit.

“We try to preach as our culture, being a team and thinking about others," Cohen said. "We see it day to day wherever we go, so it just gives us a way to give back, because we feel that we’ve been blessed that we’ve been able to stay open throughout all this at all our stores. Many, many thanks to all of our guests who have supported us throughout this.”
