VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Some local service members and their families got to cross one thing off the holiday to-do list Friday.

They lined up at Fort Story in Virginia Beach for a holiday tree giveaway. The families received a Christmas tree, a tree stand and even some ornaments.

"It gives them a peace of mind," said Cmdr. William Hougher, Executive Officer of Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story. "They don't have to decide whether they're gonna buy food, pay the bills, maybe go without a Christmas tree this year. No, we're going to take care of that for them."

It was a gesture appreciated by HM3 Christopher Hamm and his family. They were grateful to receive one of the 350 available trees

HM3 Christopher Hamm and his family were among those who received a Christmas tree during a "Trees for Troops" giveaway in Virginia Beach on Friday.

"We love decorating our Christmas trees," said Hamm. "We have a whole bunch of wonderful ornaments and we got some more amazing ornaments from the MWR to decorate our tree with as well, and it's going to be a lot of fun to put all the Christmas presents that we're getting underneath the tree."

The base command partnered with the base's MWR team and the Trees for Troops program for the giveaway.
