VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Inside the Virginia Aquarium in Virginia Beach, you’ll find a variety of sea creatures. But did you know it also houses a species considered the ‘world’s largest lizard’? They're called Komodo dragons – and they have a special friend in this week’s “Everyday Hero."

Paul Winfield walked in to offer his help at the Aquarium more than ten years ago, and never left. This Aquarium volunteer comes in twice a week and is ready to log many more hours for a task he has come to love.

One of the assistant curators says he’s been working with Winfield for a little over 10 years now and values his commitment as a volunteer.

Winfield volunteers with the herpetology team and just earned 10,000 hours of service. He has watched, fed, and groomed small Komodo dragons into the large ones you see today.

He will be presented with a bench at the Aquarium this month.

By donating his time, Winfield frees up paid staff to do other chores vital to the operation of the aquarium — and saves the facility money by volunteering his time. For this reason, WTKR News 3 and our partners at Southern Bank named Winfield this week’s “Everyday Hero."

In addition to the recognition, Southern Bank is awarding Winfield a $300 Visa gift card as a ‘Thank you’ for his good works.
