NORFOLK, Va. - A national nonprofit is set to deliver hundreds of backpacks filled with supplies to military families on Saturday.
Hundreds of pre-registered military families will receive much-needed backpacks filled with school supplies, gift cards and dry goods from the nonprofit Operation Homefront and Food Lion.
More than 450 military families are pre-registered to receive the backpacks through a drive-thru format at Norfolk Premium Outlets on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Operation Homefront says its mission is to build strong, stable, and secure military families. The Norfolk Back-to-School Brigade is supported by Food Lion, through their Food Lion Feeds initiative. The initiative helps alleviate the financial burden families face.
To prepare for Saturday's event, Food Lion volunteers packed and delivered grocery items for distribution at the event.
During this year’s campaign, Operation Homefront will distribute its 500,000th backpack with school supplies to a military child, saving families more than $55 million in back-to-school expenses since the program launched in 2008.
