CAPE CHARLES, Va. — For this week’s walk, you don’t have to travel far, but you do have to pay a toll.

When my best friend Chris visited in August, we checked out Kiptopeke State Park–that required a drive over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.

But Kiptopeke is really just across the CBBT and is definitely worth the drive… and the $20 toll and the $7 admission to the park.

There are five walking and biking trails in the park, although we never saw any bicycles and very few hikers for that matter.

All the trails eventually intersect, but we chose to focus on the brown pelican trail because I could see on the map that it mostly snakes along the coast.

And though it was a hot August day, we could always tell when we got closer to the water because of the refreshing breeze.

There are a number of overlooks that give you a fantastic Birds Eye view of the Chesapeake Bay from hundreds of feet up. Each one offers a better view than the last.

I’d been told about the cliffs at Kiptopeke for a long time, but the reality was even better than I imagined.

If you want to spend more than a few hours exploring Kiptopeke State Park, there are lots of camping options. They offer two and three-bedroom cabins, six-bedroom lodges, RV and tent camping, yurts and even a bunkhouse.
