NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A Newport News man is dead and a Hampton man is seriously injured following a police pursuit that ended in a crash Friday night.

According to the Virginia State Police, at approximately 10:29 p.m., a Virginia State Trooper saw a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on I-64 East with no headlights. When the trooper activated their emergency equipment, the driver, identified as 23-year-old Robert Lee Ham II, accelerated and refused to stop.

Ham continued eastbound in excess of 100 mph, and attempted to exit on the Mallory Street ramp when he lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle overturned several times, ejecting the passenger and killing Ham.

The passenger, identified as Kalik Kydarial Newsome, suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Ham was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, and police said it's unknown at this time if alcohol was a contributing factor.

The crash remains under investigation.
