POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. -- A Powhatan man has been arrested after investigators say he fired several shots at deputies outside his home early Wednesday morning.

The incident started when the Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office received an alarm call from a residence in the 300 block of Bellson Lane at approximately 1 a.m.

When deputies responded to the scene, they noticed the front door was open.

"They announced their presence and were immediately fired upon from outside the residence multiple times," said a sheriff’s office spokesperson.

No one was injured during the incident.

Deputies say additional Powhatan Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the home as well as units from the Chesterfield County Police Department to secure the area.

Deputies say the shots were fired from the homeowner who has been identified as 50-year-old Michael Andrew Layman.
Layman was found on an adjacent property inside a structure, according to investigators.

Deputies say an investigation revealed, Layman set off his own residential alarm.

He has been charged with two counts of attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer and one count of recklessly handling a firearm.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
