HAYES, Va. -- Local businesses in Gloucester came together and pooled their resources to provide essential items to their neighbors at no charge.
They will give out these items to people who still cannot find these in stores due to panic shopping caused by the coronavirus, also known as COVID-19.
Eggheads Diner, The Fluffy Ninja, and Haye's Auto Sales came up with the idea for Sunday, as these items are harder-to-find in rural areas. Amber Cooper, the owner of Eggheads Diner, told News 3 it is because there are not as many stores in rural communities compared to more populated ones.
Tables were set up outside the auto dealership building, the agreed-on location, where people can drive up and receive items without getting out of their vehicles.
The dealership experienced a break-in and burglary on Thursday where the perpetrator took off with a suitcase full of cash, Keith Rogers, the dealership owner, said. He added regardless of the mishap, it was not going to stop Sunday's event.
People can pick up the items, no questions asked, and will also get food provided by the diner until supplies run out.
The drive-thru giveaway is Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hayes Auto Sales, located at 753 George Washington Memorial Highway in Hayes.
