Victims identified after early-morning Newport News crash killed 2 people, police investigating

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Newport News Police Department responded to an early-morning crash that left two people dead on Sunday, September 6.

According to police, at approximately 4:57 a.m., officers responded to a single-vehicle crash in the 1200 block of 23rd Street. When they arrived, officers located an SUV that had struck a tree.

The male driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger was extricated from the vehicle and taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, where she later died.

The driver has been identified as Roman L. Stone, 42, of Newport News. The passenger has been identified as Tanay Lanay Moore, 27, of Newport News.

A preliminary investigation revealed the vehicle was traveling westbound on 23rd Street at a high rate of speed when it struck the tree.

No further information is available at this time and the investigation remains ongoing.
