2 adults, 3 children displaced following Portsmouth house fire

PORTSMOUTH, Va. - The Portsmouth Fire Department responded to a residential fire on the 800 block of Jewell Avenue in Portsmouth Wednesday afternoon.

According to fire crews, the call for the fire came in around 12:35 p.m. Crews were dispatched to the scene, where they found heavy smoke and fire showing from the home.

Two adults and three children were evacuated safely. Fire crews said the family's dog is safe, but the family cat was unable to escape the home.

The family is receiving displacement assistance from the Red Cross.

The Portsmouth Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the fire's cause.
