Police search for man wanted in connection to fatal Hampton shooting

HAMPTON, Va. - A 20-year-old man has died after a shooting in the 200 block of E. Mercury Boulevard Thursday night.

The call came in at 7:22 p.m.

Hampton Police told News 3 the man was taken to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.

A preliminary investigation revealed that an altercation took place, which resulted in the victim being shot.

After further investigation, the victim, Deshawn Powell, was an innocent bystander who tried to intervene in an ongoing domestic issue. He was not targeted by the suspect.

Investigators have identified a suspect, 22-year-old Jaylin Divyne Avery, in connection with this incident. The Portsmouth man, has warrants on file for one count of Murder, one count of Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and one count of Reckless Handling of a Firearm.

Police say Avery should be considered armed and dangerous.
