MATHEWS Co., Va. - An 80-year-old man died after his car ran off the road in the area of Ridge Road in Mathews County Thursday afternoon.
Virginia State Police responded to the area of Rt. 626, south of Buckley Hall Road (Rt. 198) around 12:26 p.m. for a report of a fatal single-vehicle crash.
State Police say 80-year-old Juergen Jacob Metzger of Foster, Virginia, was driving a 2000 Dodge Dakota in the southbound lane of Ridge Road when he ran off the road and hit a tree. Metzger died upon impact.
His family members have been notified of his death.
Metzger was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and alcohol was not a contributing factor, officials say.
