VIRGINIA - All public beaches and race tracks in the state of Virginia are reopening Friday.

Reopening for the beaches means that they can now be accessed for recreational activity in addition to fishing and exercise.

There will be strict physical distancing and other restrictions in place, including:

  • Keep six feet apart unless family
  • No groups of more than 10 people
  • No speakers
  • No large coolers
  • No alcohol
  • No tents OR groups of umbrellas
  • No group sports (volleyball, football, Frisbee, etc.)

In addition, no entertainment or programming that generate mass gatherings will be permitted. Public parking garages and surface lots will be limited to 50% capacity. All beach play sets will remain closed. Existing City ordinances already apply to some of these activities in the resort area.

Governor Northam stated that he would not hesitate to reinstate additional restrictions or close beaches if people do not follow the rules.

Horse tracks, NASCAR, and other vehicle racing will also be reopening Friday. The tracks will be allowed to hold single-day events that are closed to the public and without spectators.

No tailgating and camping is allowed during these events, including staff or race participants.
