Cause of Perquimans County church fire determined to be arson

PERQUIMANS Co., N.C. - A Tuesday night fire at Spirit and Truth United Methodist Church was determined to have been intentionally set, according to the Perquimans County Fire Marshal's office.

According to fire officials, the call for the fire came in at 9:31 p.m. Firefighters responded to the church, located at 206 Main Street in Winfall, where they immediately saw smoke coming from the back of the structure.

Fire crews were able to extinguish and control the fire shortly after entering the building. Due to the fire's location, the church suffered extreme heat and smoke damage throughout the entire structure.

Approximately 30 firefighters were on scene to fight the blaze. No injuries were reported.

According to the fire marshal's office, Fire Marshal Overman made a determination that the fire had been intentionally set based on the origin and other evidence at the scene.

The fire remains under investigation.
