Chesapeake Police investigating shooting near traffic stop site

CHESAPEAKE, Va. - The Chesapeake Police Department is investigating a shooting that happened near the area where officers were conducting a traffic stop Tuesday morning.

Around 10:40 a.m., officers were conducting a traffic stop on a vehicle near the intersection of Cavalier Boulevard and Taft Drive in Portsmouth. About five minutes later, officers heard several gunshots that appeared to be close to where the traffic stop was happening.

Witnesses in the area told police they saw a gold vehicle, possibly a Chrysler, speeding away.

Officers and detectives searched the surrounding area and found a structure that had likely been damaged by gunfire. This structure was close to where officers were during the traffic stop.

This incident is currently under investigation.
