Hampton Roads continues to see decrease in COVID-19 test positivity rate; Va. reports 36 deaths statewide, 16 local

The Virginia Department of Health released their daily updated numbers involving COVID-19 cases within the state.

According to their website, there are now 137,460 total cases, 130,960 of which are confirmed and 6,500 are probable. There are 2,920 total COVID-19 related deaths, with 2,734 being confirmed and 186 being probable.

The case numbers are up by 1,101, and deaths are up by 36 since Wednesday. 16 deaths reported were from our local viewing area. There were 183 local cases from the state's update which made up 16.6% of the total increase.

A total of 1,822,012 COVID-19 PCR tests have now been given in Virginia. The percent positivity rate statewide is continuing to trend down, including rates in many local districts. Virginia's percent positivity rate has dropped to 6.7%, down .2% from Wednesday. The eastern region of Virginia's percent positivity rate is 6.4%.

On Tuesday, Gov. Northam stated that, "That is really good news. We're seeing a slight increase in hospital beds there that are occupied by COVID patients, but overall we are pleased with the region's progress."

The Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association also updated their numbers. As of Thursday, there are 669 people currently being hospitalized, confirmed with COVID-19. There are 326 people receiving inpatient hospital care whose test results are still pending. Combined, there are a total of 995 being hospitalized for coronavirus related illness. That's 32 less hospitalizations from Wednesday.

The total statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations that have been reported over time is now 10,464.

225 confirmed positive patients, and those whose test results are pending, are currently hospitalized in the ICU.

109 hospital patients, both confirmed for coronavirus, and those with test results pending, are currently on a ventilator. 613 ventilators are being used in hospitals out of the 3,088 in the state - that's 20% usage.

16,671 patients who have been hospitalized for coronavirus have been discharged.
