Hampton Roads, surrounding areas make up 33% of Commonwealth's 1,505 COVID-19 daily case rise

The Virginia Department of Health released their daily updated numbers involving coronavirus cases within the state.

According to their website, there are now 86,072 total cases, 82,871 of which are confirmed and 3,201 are probable. There are 2,082 total coronavirus related deaths, with 1,978 being confirmed and 104 being probable. The case numbers are up by 1,505, and deaths are up by 4 in Virginia since Sunday.

A total of 1,036,010 total PCR tests have now been given in Virginia. Out of the total amount of PCR tests conducted, Hampton Roads had a large percentage 7-day average of positive cases as of July 23:

  • Chesapeake - 13.6%
  • Hampton - 9.6%
  • Norfolk - 13%
  • Peninsula - 8.7%
  • Portsmouth - 17.5%
  • Virginia Beach - 11.8%
  • Eastern Shore - 5.5%
  • Western Tidewater - 10.4%

The Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association also updated their numbers. As of Monday, there are 821 people currently being hospitalized for coronavirus. There are 379 people currently receiving inpatient hospital care whose test results are pending. 260 confirmed positive patients, and those whose test results are pending, are currently hospitalized in the ICU.

140 hospital patients, both confirmed for coronavirus, and those with test results pending, are currently on a ventilator. 628 ventilators are being used in hospitals out of the 3,071 in the state - that's 20% usage.

10,940 patients who have been hospitalized for coronavirus have been discharged.

Hampton Roads and the surrounding areas alone saw 493 new coronavirus cases and no new deaths since Sunday.

Chesapeake reported its second highest one day case rise on Monday with Friday being the highest.

  • Northampton 297 cases, 45 hospitalized, 28 deaths (+4 cases, +0 hospitalizations, +0 deaths from Sunday)
  • Hampton 916 cases, 48 hospitalized, 4 deaths (+43 cases, +0 hospitalizations, +0 deaths from Sunday)
  • Norfolk 2,779 cases, 158 hospitalized, 20 deaths (+8 cases, +1 hospitalizations, +0 deaths from Sunday)
  • James City County 510 cases, 59 hospitalized, 16 deaths (+13 cases, +0 hospitalizations, +0 deaths from Sunday)
  • Newport News 1,474 cases, 71 hospitalized, 15 deaths (+50 cases, +0 hospitalizations, +0 deaths from Sunday)
  • Poquoson 33 cases, 2 hospitalized, 0 deaths (+1 cases, +2 hospitalizations, +0 deaths from Sunday)
  • Williamsburg 105 cases, 12 hospitalized, 6 deaths (+3 cases, +0 hospitalizations, +0 deaths from Sunday)
  • York County 282 cases, 14 hospitalized, 3 deaths (+3 cases, +0 hospitalizations, +0 deaths from Sunday)
