Local area reported 12 COVID-19 deaths from Tuesday with 5 being in Portsmouth; 927 cases and 29 related deaths reported statewide

The Virginia Department of Health released their daily updated numbers involving COVID-19 cases within the state.

According to their website, there are now 122,542 total cases, 117,141 of which are confirmed and 5,401 are probable. There are 2,641 total COVID-19 related deaths, with 2,508 being confirmed and 133 being probable.

The case numbers are up by 927, and deaths are up by 29 since Tuesday.There were 12 deaths reported in 7 of our local cities out of the increase from Tuesday with Portsmouth reporting 5 of them. There were also 144 local cases reported, meaning our area made up roughly 15.5% of the state's total case increase.

A total of 1,605,290 COVID-19 PCR tests have now been given in Virginia. Virginia's COVID-19 test percent positivity rate hasn't changed from Tuesday and currently is sitting at a 7.7%. The Western Tidewater region saw a slight decrease is test percent positivity rate last week, but the region is now back to reporting the highest rate in the local area.

The Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association also updated their numbers. As of Wednesday, there are 836 people currently being hospitalized, confirmed with COVID-19. There are 278 people receiving inpatient hospital care whose test results are still pending. Combined, there are a total of 1,114 being hospitalized for coronavirus related illness. That's 75 more hospitalizations from Tuesday.

The total statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations that have been reported over time is now 9,678.

266 confirmed positive patients, and those whose test results are pending, are currently hospitalized in the ICU.

134 hospital patients, both confirmed for coronavirus, and those with test results pending, are currently on a ventilator. 614 ventilators are being used in hospitals out of the 3,085 in the state - that's 20% usage.

15,319 patients who have been hospitalized for coronavirus have been discharged.
