Virginia Beach reaches 7K COVID-19 cases as area remains highest local case count over time

The Virginia Department of Health released their daily updated numbers involving COVID-19 cases within the state.

According to their website, there are now 149,687 total cases, 141,850 of which are confirmed and 7,837 are probable. There are 3,250 total COVID-19 related deaths, with 3,037 being confirmed and 213 being probable.

The case numbers are up by 966, and deaths are up by 22 since Thursday. Deaths were reported in 3 local cities: Portsmouth, Southampton & Newport News. Virginia Beach saw the most local overnight increase of cases at 43, and the city has now reached 7,000 cases. There were 147 local cases which made up about 15% of the state's total increase.

A total of 2,094,361 COVID-19 PCR tests have now been given in Virginia. As of Friday the statewide 7-day COVID-19 test positivity rate is currently sitting at 4.5%. Several health districts in Hampton Roads are reporting at 5% or lower in test positivity rate, including: the Peninsula Health District, Eastern Shore District, Hampton, Virginia Beach, and Chesapeake.

The Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association also updated their numbers. As of Thursday, there are 590 people currently being hospitalized, confirmed with COVID-19. There are 300 people receiving inpatient hospital care whose test results are still pending. Combined, there are a total of 890 being hospitalized for coronavirus related illness. That's 23 less hospitalizations from Thursday.

The total statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations that have been reported over time is now 11,140.

201 confirmed positive patients, and those whose test results are pending, are currently hospitalized in the ICU.

108 hospital patients, both confirmed for coronavirus, and those with test results pending, are currently on a ventilator. 644 ventilators are being used in hospitals out of the 3,107 in the state - that's 21% usage.

17,752 patients who have been hospitalized for coronavirus have been discharged.
