Virginia reports 953 new COVID-19 cases, 41 deaths; Virginia Beach, Newport News report highest local case increases

The Virginia Department of Health released their daily updated numbers involving COVID-19 cases within the state.

According to their website, there are now 139,655 total cases, 132,966 of which are confirmed and 6,689 are probable. There are 2,990 total COVID-19 related deaths, with 2,787 being confirmed and 203 being probable.

The case numbers are up by 953 and deaths are up by 41 since Friday. There were 9 deaths reported from our viewing area out of the state's update. There were 114 local cases from the state's update which made up 11.96% of the total increase.

A total of 1,866,666 COVID-19 PCR tests have now been given in Virginia. Chesapeake's percent positivity rate has dropped to 4.4% - on Sept. 1, it was being reported at 10%. Virginia's percent positivity rate overall continues to see a slight decrease, with it now being reported at 6.2%.

The Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association also updated their numbers. As of Saturday, there are 661 people currently being hospitalized, confirmed with COVID-19. There are 299 people receiving inpatient hospital care whose test results are still pending. Combined, there are a total of 960 being hospitalized for coronavirus related illness. That's 15 additional hospitalizations from Friday.

The total statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations that have been reported over time is now 10,562.

219 confirmed positive patients, and those whose test results are pending, are currently hospitalized in the ICU.

108 hospital patients, both confirmed for coronavirus, and those with test results pending, are currently on a ventilator. 592 ventilators are being used in hospitals out of the 3,089 in the state - that's 19% usage.

16,848 patients who have been hospitalized for coronavirus have been discharged.
