Western Tidewater region seeing spike in COVID-19 test positivity rate

The Virginia Department of Health released their daily updated numbers involving coronavirus cases within the state.

According to their website, there are now 100,749 total cases, 96,807 of which are confirmed and 3,942 are probable. There are 2,327 total coronavirus related deaths, with 2,215 being confirmed and 112 being probable. The case numbers are up by 663, and deaths are up by 1 since Sunday. Virginia's only death from Sunday was reported in Norfolk.

A total of 1,257,605 PCR tests have now been given in Virginia. Hampton Roads and surrounding cities made up about 33% of Virginia's daily increase with 217 cases from Sunday.

News 3 is monitoring a percent positivity spike in the Western Tidewater District. That's the percentage of people who test positive for the virus of those overall who have been tested. On August 2, the region reported a 12.8% positivity rate. As of August 6, that number has gone up to 14%.

The Western Tidewater District consists of Franklin, Suffolk, Isle of Wight and Southampton.

The Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association also updated their numbers. As of Monday, there are 855 people currently being hospitalized for confirmed coronavirus. There are 396 people receiving inpatient hospital care whose test results are still pending. Combined, there are a total of 1,251 being hospitalized for coronavirus related illness. That's 51 more hospitalizations from Sunday.

The total statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations that have been reported over time is now 8,391.

279 confirmed positive patients, and those whose test results are pending, are currently hospitalized in the ICU.

159 hospital patients, both confirmed for coronavirus, and those with test results pending, are currently on a ventilator. 592 ventilators are being used in hospitals out of the 3,073 in the state - that's 19% usage.

12,961 patients who have been hospitalized for coronavirus have been discharged.
