Currituck Co. officials locate swimmer who went missing after jumping from boat

CURRITUCK Co., N.C. - Officials located the body of a missing boater after he jumped off a rented pontoon boat to swim.

Around 12:30 p.m., Monday Currituck County took a boating incident call.

A 34-year-old man jumped off of a rented pontoon boat to swim.

He began to struggle in the water and his friends said they threw him a life jacket. Unable to reach the life jacket, he then fell below the water’s surface, officials said.

NC Wildlife was first on scene and began the search. Currituck county Sheriff’s Office joined the search as well as the US Coast Guard and NC Marine Patrol.

The search for the missing boater resumed Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. Around 5:20 p.m., Sundara Baskar Pooraswamy-Chinna's body was was recovered from the Currituck Sound. Reports say he was found using a side scan sonar device utilized by the Hertford County and Gates County Emergency Management.

The location that Pooraswamy-Chinna was found was in approximately 8 feet of water just inside of Dare County near the location that he was last seen, officials confirm. After an initial examination of his body no foul play is suspected.
