SUFFOLK, Va. - The driver of a passenger vehicle avoided what could have been a tragic scene involving a train Friday night.
Around 9:29 p.m., dispatchers were notified of a crash involving a Norfolk Southern train and a passenger vehicle that happened at the railroad crossing at S. Saratoga Street and Hall Avenue.
A preliminary investigation determined that the passenger vehicle, a Ford Mustang, was disabled while on the track. The driver, a man, was able to escape the vehicle before it was hit by the train.
The train did not derail after the crash.
Four railroad crossings in the Downtown Suffolk area are currently blocked as a result of the incident.
Suffolk Police and units with Suffolk Fire & Rescue remain on scene as the investigation remains ongoing.
