PORTSMOUTH, Va. – The Norfolk naval base held a special promotion ceremony Monday for several local heroes who defend our heroes - the firefighter officers at the shipyard and the naval weapons station.

Five new captains assigned to Norfolk Naval Shipyard and Naval Weapons Station Yorktown were pinned during the ceremony at Trophy Park Monday morning.

These five new fire department officers will lead a single-engine or ladder company and will serve as the initial incident commander of emergency responses. Some will also be responsible for ambulance personnel.

"[This is] the beginning of a brand new batch of officers for us," said Kevin Janney, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Fire Chief. "The five here are part of 25 who were promoted department-wide, and just these five represent about 70 years of experience with our department."
