Five people displaced after fire rips through Suffolk duplex

SUFFOLK, Va. - Four adults and a child have been forced out of their home after a fire in the 6000 block of Brookwood Drive Monday evening.

Dispatchers received a call at 6:10 p.m. notifying them of the fire at the duplex in the Wynnwood neighborhood. The first units from Suffolk Fire & Rescue arrived on scene at 6:17 p.m.

Battalion Chief Barney Howard said one duplex sustained significant fire and heat damage, and the adjacent duplex sustained significant smoke damage.

The fire was called under control at 6:28 p.m. No one was hurt during this incident.

The American Red Cross is helping the five people who have been displaced.

Responding units included Engines 5, 9, 10 and 25; Ladders 3 and 5; Battalion 2, Medic 25, EMS-1, Rescue 1 and Safety 1. The Chesapeake Fire Department provided mutual aid assistance with Ladder 12 and Engine 12 responding.

The Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
