NORFOLK, Va. - Eastern Virginia Medical School students distributed donated cleaning supplies to childcare centers across Hampton Roads Friday.

The EVMS student volunteers, along with representatives from EVMS Minus 9 to 5 and individuals from 10 different community organizations, all helped make the deliveries possible.

Volunteers and organizers of the event say each box contains gallons of bleach, a box of masks, toilet paper, paper towels and disposable gloves.

Event leaders say right now, many local childcare providers are having difficulty getting the supplies they need in order to care for their children.

“We surveyed almost 200 childcare providers by phone. A regional group of about 12 people made those calls to collect information on what resources they needed and what their biggest pinpoints were right now, and about 90 percent of them said, ‘We are really having challenges getting the supplies that we need,’” said Jane Elyce Glasgow, PhD, Executive Director of EVMS Minus 9 to 5.

The group says Friday they will be focusing on the 74 childcare centers in Norfolk and Portsmouth.
