NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Taisha Strong was so excited to win the Virginia Lottery, she cried.

The Newport News resident won the $500,000 top prize in the Virginia Lottery’s Premier Cash Scratcher game. She bought her winning ticket at Speedy Mart located at 1904 Jefferson Avenue in Newport News.

Premier Cash is one of dozens of Scratchers available from the Virginia Lottery, and Strong’s ticket is the first top prize claimed in this game - which means two more remain unclaimed! The chances of winning the top prize in this game are 1 in 652,800. The chances of winning any prize are 1 in 3.05.

Strong told Lottery officials that the prize will enable her to pay for a funeral for her father, who recently passed away.

“I want to give back to some people who have helped me,” she said.

Newport News received more than $27.3 million in Lottery funds for K-12 public education last fiscal year. Visit the Virginia Lottery’s Giving Back page to learn more.
