VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - AdvisorSmith, a leading information resource for business advice and original research, released a new study, Safest Cities in America, which said Virginia Beach ranks as the #1 safest large city.

The study examined data from 3,107 cities and based each city's safety ranking upon its crime score. Researchers examined crime rates in each municipality for violent and property crimes to create a proprietary crime score. They categorized the data by city size in order to find the top 10 safest small, midsize, and large cities.

Some interesting data they found for Virginia Beach:

  • Virginia Beach's violent crime rate was 1.3 per 1000 residents, and the city had a total crime score of 35.8.
  • Virginia Beach was the only large city on the list in the state of Virginia.
