VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — One person has been arrested in connection with a shooting Friday night in Virginia Beach that left a 20-year-old man dead.

Police responded to a report of a shooting around 10:00 p.m. in the 5500 block of New Colony Drive. When officers arrived, they found Jamele Newby-Gibson, 20, of Virginia Beach, in the roadway suffering from a gunshot wound.

Officers provided medical aid until Newby-Gibson was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

Following an investigation by the Virginia Beach Police Department’s Homicide Unit, detectives identified 19-year-old Nashaun Reid of Virginia Beach as the suspect. He was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

“I have to commend the work of our first responding zone officers and our detectives who diligently worked this case from the onset and were able to identify, apprehend, and charge the suspect in this offense within six hours from the time of the incident,” said Chief Paul Neudigate in a statement. “To be able to remove a dangerous individual from our community and bring closure to a grieving family in such a short period speaks volumes to their dedication and professionalism.”

Police have not released a possible motive for the shooting. The investigation is ongoing.
