ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. - Isle of Wight County Schools have announced delaying the five-day return of PreK through third grade students due to current COVID-19 metrics.

At a school board meeting on November 18, Dr. Thornton announced the possibility of hybrid students in grades PreK through third returning to school five days a week, beginning on December 7.

Since then, the COVID-19 positivity rate in the county continues to increase. On Tuesday, Virginia reported 2,228, new COVID-19 cases and 31 additional deaths 31 since Monday.

IOW school officials said they have also witnessed a concerning increase in positive cases, as well as more individuals in quarantine and isolation in our schools before, during, and after the Thanksgiving break.

Due to the current metrics, PreK through 3rd grade students will remain on the hybrid schedule for now.

IOW County Schools will continue to monitor both community and school health data and make a decision in early January about a return to 5 days a week for those students. Any proposed changes will be communicated to all families and employees at that time.
