James City Co. officials search man's home after suspicious bag left in neighbor's driveway

JAMES CITY Co., Va. - One man is in custody after a report of a suspicious item in the 200 block of Old Cart Road led to a search of his home.

The James City County Police and Fire Departments responded to the area just before 10 a.m. A resident reported that her neighbor left a suspicious bag in her driveway.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the man had a military background and may be suffering from mental health issues. He was taken into custody for evaluation.

The bag was cleared, and nothing criminal was found inside.

Officials are currently searching the man's home for items related to his military service, which may include destructive devices and/or components.

People who live in the area were notified of the search and were told to shelter in place. One person requested help in evacuating.

The investigation remains ongoing.

The Newport News Fire Department Bomb Squad and FBI are also on scene helping with the search.
