KITTY HAWK, N.C. — The Town of Kitty Hawk on Tuesday said an officer's actions were justified when he shot and killed a dog earlier this month.
On October 1, police responded to the 4000 block of Smith Street after a 911 call for a dog running at large and being aggressive towards children. Police said when they located the dog's owner, the dog came from under the home, aggressively charged the officer and bit him.
The officer fired his weapon to stop the attack, and the dog did not survive, police said.
The Town Manager placed the officer on administrative leave pending an investigation. On Tuesday, the Town of Kitty Hawk Police Department released the details of that investigation, which show the officer was justified in his actions.
Police said the officer was in a rush to respond to the call and left his body camera on a charging port at the station, however, another officer's camera picked up what happened.
"The officer’s account of the event is corroborated by multiple eyewitnesses to the incident and body camera footage from other responding Officers," a release from the police department said. "There is also security camera footage of the dog acting aggressively towards children."
The district attorney reviewing the case while the situation is unfortunate, the officer's actions were justified.
