Large fire engulfs building at Suffolk landfill

SUFFOLK, Va. - Crews with Suffolk Fire & Rescue are working a fire at the SPSA Waste Solutions Regional Landfill located at 1 Bob Foeller Drive Thursday night.

A security guard at the facility called dispatchers at 7:19 p.m. The first units arrived on scene 10 minutes later.

Suffolk Fire Chief Michael Barakey said crews arrived on scene to find heavy fire coming from the roof of the operations building, which includes administrative offices and a maintenance facility. Heavy equipment inside the maintenance facility are also fully involved.

SPSA officials on site say normal refuse collection schedules and transfer truck traffic in the morning will not be impacted and that affected staff will be relocated elsewhere at the facility.

Responding units include Engines 1, 2, 3 and 6; Ladders 3 and 6; Battalions 1, 2 and 3; Car 1, Tankers 1, 8 and 9; Medic 3,]; Fire Marshals 1 & Safety 1; and EMS-1.

No injuries were reported.

The Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.

While there is heavy smoke in thea area, traffic on Route 58/Portsmouth Boulevard has not been impacted.
