NORFOLK, Va. - A new holiday tradition is currently afloat in front of the Battleship Wisconsin.

As part of Nauticus’ WinterFest on the Wisconsin experience, a small boat with a twinkling Christmas tree was anchored in-front of the ship.

The floating tree is said to serve as a gesture of hope and optimism for the community after a challenging year.

The small boat itself was built entirely by local 8th grade students participating in the Sail Nauticus program.

WinterFest on the Wisconsin opens to the public Saturday evening at 6 p.m.

The new event takes the place of Dickens' Christmas Towne, which was canceled this year due to COVID-19.

'WinterFest' includes 250,000 Christmas lights and a 'light trail' visitors can follow. There's also a 25-foot-tall Christmas tree with a special tree lighting ceremony each night, among other features.
