COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. -- A police officer shot a man with a rifle after responding to a Colonial Heights home for a domestic dispute.

The man was last listed in critical, but stable condition, according to police.

Officers were called to the 100 Block of Cedar Creek Lane in Colonial Heights at about 9 p.m. Sunday, March 8.

"As police units responded, officers located a female that had exited the residence and brought her to safety," a Colonial Heights Police spokesperson said. "Officers attempted to communicate with the male party, but the subject barricaded himself in the residence and could be seen through the windows armed with a rifle."

When the man opened the front door and confronted police with the rifle, a Chesterfield officer fired a shot at the man.

The round hit the man and caused him to drop the rifle.

"The subject was ordered out of the house and was taken into custody without further incident," the Colonial Heights Police spokesperson said. "Detectives from both agencies are on scene investigating further."

Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call Colonial Heights Police at 804-520-9300.
