RICHMOND, Va. -- Kings Dominion will remain closed for the remainder of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"With the diminishing number of calendar days left in the 2020 operating season, as well as Virginia’s Phase 3 reopening restrictions that limit the park’s capacity to 1,000 guests, the decision has been made to remain closed," a release said. "The park will continue to work with public health authorities to ensure guests can return to fun in a safe environment next season."

Earlier in the summer, Kings Dominion expressed disappointment with the restrictions applied to amusement parks under Phase Three of the governor's reopening plan.

"Although we respect the decisions of our state officials, the restriction of limiting our park to just 1,000 guests does not reflect the large volume of space available to accommodate recommended social distancing protocols, and essentially suggests the state will only allow us to have 5 people per operating acre," said Kings Dominion spokesperson Maggie Sellers in a statement to CBS 6 in June.

“We are disappointed that we are unable to welcome our guests back to the park this season,” said Tony Johnson, vice president and general manager of Kings Dominion. “The safety of our guests and associates is always our top priority, and we have done our due diligence in developing a comprehensive safety plan in accordance with industry and public health standards. However, the continued uncertainty in our region brought by COVID-19 has led us to the difficult yet responsible decision to keep the park closed for the rest of the year. We look forward to a great 2021 season with the return of favorite rides, new attractions and entertainment for the whole family. We thank our guests and associates for their continued loyalty and support during this challenging time.”

Kings Dominion is planning for several new enhancements in 2021, including:

  • The opening of a reimagined area in Soak City, Coconut Shores, featuring an all-new multi-level aqua play structure, a mini wave pool for kids, and a new dining experience;
  • The return of exciting seasonal events including Grand Carnivale; and
  • New innovative dining options designed by the park’s executive chef and culinary team.

In a commitment to its valued Season Passholders, Kings Dominion had previously extended the validity of 2020 passes and add-on products through 2021. Now, passholders will also receive a Pass PerksTM Loyalty Reward valid for purchases within the park next season. Season Passes for 2021 will go on sale beginning September 8, 2020.
