Man arrested in connection to Hampton church burglary

HAMPTON, Va. - Hampton Police arrested a man in connection to a burglary at the Little Zion Baptist Church.

Police say they received a burglary call early Tuesday morning around 5:08 a.m., in the 1800 block of West Queen Street.

37-year-old James Derrick Ferrell, of Hayes, was arrested in connection to the incident.

According to police, the suspect broke into the business and removed two small safes and keysto the church van. The suspect then fled the scene with the van.

News 3 spoke with Pastor Richardson of Little Zion Baptist Church in regards to the incident.

“That van as used to pick up our members on Sunday morning. Transport our young people to events. It was part of our ministry,” Richardson adds.

Ferrell has been charged with burglary and grand larceny, police say.

Ferrell is currently in custody at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.
