19-year-old dead after Newport News shooting; police investigate homicide

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Newport News Police are investigating a homicide after a Saturday afternoon shooting left a 19-year-old dead.

Around 3:17 p.m., police responded to a shooting in the area of 42nd Street and Madison Avenue. When officers arrived they found 19-year-old Hasin Tyrel Burgess lying on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound.

Officials say he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are searching for four suspects in connection to this incident that were last seen fleeing on foot northbound on Madison Avenue. Police describe all four suspects as black males in their teens or young adults. One was described as tall, skinny, wearing black pants with a white stripe down the legs and another was wearing a white t-shirt and black or dark-colored pants.
