CHESAPEAKE, Va. - A man died after crashing during a police chase early Friday morning.

Virginia State Police (VSP) said around 12:45 a.m, a Virginia State Trooper was conducting radar on I-64 at the Chesapeake/Virginia Beach line, when a 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander was checked at traveling at 87 mph in a 60 mph speed zone.

When the trooper turned on emergency lights the trooper saw the vehicle driving erratically and the person refusing to pull over.

Police said the driver was identified as 24-year-old Jashion Jameel Brooks.

Brooks allegedly exited the Indian River Road east exit, drove over several curbs and then turned on to Regent Drive.

VSP said Brooks then lost control of the vehicle and ran off the roadway, before overturning. The overturn lead to Brooks' death upon impact.

Brooks was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, and alcohol played a contributing factor in the accident, according to VSP.

The incident is still under investigation at this time.
