HAMPTON, Va. - Virginia State Police are investigating a two vehicle crash that happened in the city of Hampton, resulting in a fatality on Sunday.

Around 2 p.m., the Virginia State Police Communications Center got several calls regarding a crash on I-64 westbound at the I-264mm/I-664 interchange.

Preliminary Investigations revealed that a 1995 Lincoln Towncar, operated by 58-year-old Troy Burrell, was traveling westbound on I-64 when he reportedly struck a 2017 Volkswagen Jetta in the rear, causing both vehicles to run off the roadway and strike the jersey wall, state police said.

The operator of the VW Jetta, Tyler Duarte, suffered minor non-life threatening injuries.

Burrell was taken to Hampton Careplex where he later died from the injuries sustained in the accident.

According to police, Burrell was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash and alcohol was a contributing factor.

His family has been notified.
