Man in custody after Newport News tactical situation

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A man was taken into custody after Newport News Police responded to a welfare check on Saturday afternoon that resulted in shots being fired.

According to police, around 2:03 p.m. police police responded to the first block of Cedarwood Way in reference to checking the welfare of an individual.

When police arrived they found a woman outside a residence who said a man known to her was inside the residence.

Officers attempted to make contact with the man, and he shot a gun inside the residence.

Police say no officers were injured and no officers fired their guns.

A 26-year-old man was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital where he is being evaluated.

A perimeter was set up outside the residence, and the NNPD Tactical Operations Unit assisted in the incident.

There are no further details available at this time and the investigation remains ongoing.
