NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Newport News Police Department responded to a tactical situation after a man fired shots inside an apartment in the 5400 block of Arlington Avenue Thursday afternoon.
Around 4:44 p.m., dispatchers received a call about gunshots heard in the area. When officers arrived on scene, they found out a man fired two shots into a wall inside an apartment.
Police say the neighbors who live next door were not hurt and were able to safely get out of their apartment.
Officers tried to meet with the man who fired the shots, but they say he would not leave the apartment.
After several tries, they called a tactical situation at 6:16 p.m.

Just before 11 p.m., police say they found the man inside the apartment from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
