Man taken into custody following tactical situation in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Newport News Police Department responded to a tactical situation in the 700 block of Gloucester Drive Saturday morning.

According to police, at 9 a.m., dispatch received a call for an assault incident at the above location. When officers arrived, they spoke to a woman who reported being assaulted by a male subject she knew. Officers attempted to make contact with the subject, but he refused to exit the residence.

Negotiators were called at 9:24 a.m. to speak to the subject, and after several attempts to have him exit, a tactical situation was called at 11:23 a.m.

The subject was placed into custody at 2:02 p.m. without further incident.

Newport News Police said in a release that Police Chief Chief Steve Drew credits the patrol division, negotiators, and the tactical team on their response and bringing this incident to a safe conclusion for everyone involved.
