WAVERLY, Va. - A Sussex I State Prison sergeant and a K9 were stabbed in an assault allegedly involving multiple inmates at the facility Saturday night.

According to the Virginia Department of Corrections, the incident happened around 6 p.m. The sergeant was stabbed six times and received wounds to his hand, arm and the side of his body.

A K9 officer and her K9 responded to the sergeant's call for assistance, and the K9 was also stabbed.

The incident was contained shortly after 11 p.m. The VADOC said a strike team was deployed to the prison to assist.

The sergeant was admitted, treated and released from a local hospital Saturday night, and the K9 received emergency surgery and is expected to live.

According to the VADOC, nine inmates have been identified as suspected of having been involved in the assault. A number of other inmates engaged in disruptive behavior, including refusing to return to their cells, lighting fires and breaking sprinkler heads.

An investigation is underway and the VADOC expects to seek criminal charges against those responsible for the assault.
