NORFOLK, Va. - Virginia State Police arrested a Virginia Beach man for manslaughter following a fatal crash that was allegedly caused from driving under the influence.
On March 24 around 9:10 a.m., Virginia State Police responded to a fatal single vehicle accident involving a pedestrian.
The pedestrian, 23-year-old James Charles Steinhauser Jr., was killed by a vehicle that lost control on Evans Street in Norfolk.
According to police, Steinhauser was repairing potholes on Evans Street when he was struck by a 2004 Subaru driven by Erick Duane Kaba.
Based on police investigation, Kaba was traveling I-64 eastbound, when he lost control of the vehicle, drove off the roadway, and drove through the median into the westbound lanes of I-64.
Kaba overcorrected back into the median, then struck an embankment at the overpass of Evans Street, which caused the vehicle to go airborne.
While the vehicle was airborne, it hit Steinhauser. Steinhauser died from impact, according to police.
Kaba was taken to Norfolk Sentara Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries, according to police.
Erick Duane Kaba was arrested prior to Memorial Day Weekend for DUI involuntary manslaughter, driving under the influence of drugs, and driving while suspended/revoked third offense.
Police say Kaba received no bond and is currently at the Virginia Beach City Jail.
