MATHEWS COUNTY, Va. - State Police are investigating a fatal crash that took place Monday afternoon.

Police say the crash occurred around 12:39 p.m., on 12747 John Clayton Highway.

According to officials, a 1999 GMC Savana Van, driven by 29-year-old William S. Diller, was traveling on Route 14 in the westbound lane attempting to pass in a curve that was marked as a no passing zone.

Police say Diller struck a 2004 Chrysler Town & Country Van head-on, which was traveling in the eastbound lane of Route 14.

The impact of the crash caused the Chrysler to drive off the roadway into the ditch.

Officials say the driver of the Chrysler, 75-year-old Franklin Grayson Williams, Jr. was killed upon impact.

William's passenger, 57-year-old Lisa Morgan Temple, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Riverside Regional Hospital.

Diller also suffered serious injuries and was transported from the scene.

The crash is still under investigation and it is unknown at this time if alcohol was a contributing factor. Police say charges are pending and will be reviewed by the Commonwealth Attorney's Office.
