HAMPTON, Va. - Virginia State Police are investigating a hit-and-run fatal crash that resulted in a vehicle being stolen early Sunday morning.

According to police, around 2:30 a.m., police received a call by a victim who said he had been hit by a silver Ford Fusion while driving on Interstate 64, west of Northampton Boulevard.

Police say the victim followed the Ford Fusion towards the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. The driver of the Fusion was speeding when they lost control of the vehicle, and overturned at the entrance of the tunnel of the westbound lanes.

As a result of the crash, the female passenger was ejected from the vehicle, and died upon impact. The male driver was able to escape from the vehicle after the crash, according to police.

A driver passing by stopped to assist the driver at the crash. While trying to assist, the driver stole the passerby's vehicle and fled the scene, police say.

The 2018 Chevrolet Equinox that was stolen, was later located wrecked and abandoned on Pelican Shores Drive in Hampton.

Police say they are continuing to investigate this investigation.

The State Police are also seeking the public's assistance for any witnesses driving in the area of the crash or to LaSalle Avenue and Pelican Shores Drive in Hampton. Anyone with information is asked to contact Virginia State Police at (757) 424-6800.
