VIRGINA BEACH, Va. - Police are looking into an officer-involved shooting that left one person dead at the Oceanfront on Friday.

The Virginia Beach Police Department tweeted that one person, the suspect, was shot to death in the 200 block of 35th Street.

Officers say they were serving a felony warrant on a fugitive and that no officers were injured during the incident. The call came in around 11:25 a.m.

Police said officers engaged the suspect in the 200 block of 35th Street and as shots were fired, the suspect was struck. Officers immediately began rescue efforts, but unfortunately were unsuccessful, they said.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene and a handgun was recovered near the suspect.

Norfolk Police later tweeted that both their officers and the VBPD were involved but the VBPD is leading the investigation.

The person's identity is being withheld for 24 hours after the initial next of kin notification has been made.

As is standard in all officer-involved shootings, The Virginia Beach Police Department's Investigative Division and the Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney, as well as the Office of Internal Affairs, are continuing their investigations into this incident.
