Suspect in custody after 19-year-old Navy Sailor dies following Portsmouth shooting

PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Detectives with the Portsmouth Police are investigating a homicide after a 19-year-old Navy Sailor died following a Monday night shooting.

On October 12, around 8:30 p.m., officials were notified of multiple shots fired near the 20 block of Woodland Street.

Later, a man walked into a local hospital to be treated for a gunshot injury.

19-year-old Darius D. Whitted, of the US Navy, later died from his injuries, police say.

According to police, one suspect was taken into custody for second degree murder.

The investigation remains ongoing.
